About this advert
Tom Ford fragrance for men
For: Tom Ford

Sex sells. But how far is too far? Tom Ford's latest campaign is advertising predominantly to men: being the first male fragrance for this brand, they are ultimately selling to a manís sexual fantasy. The woman's nails and lips are red, the colour of blood, anger, love? Lust? The long nails and open mouth propose just as much as the nakedness, this is not an ordinary advert that skirts around suggestion. It rubs it in the consumer's face. The bottle resting between a woman's private parts is again an obvious appeal to men: is where this bottle is where all men want to be? However I believe that this is not only an advert for men to drool over. The advert is sexy and glamorous. The woman's perfectly tanned and oiled skin gives the ad a slick, sleek look that could cross the line into sleazy. Although in my opinion it doesn't do this. The only body parts we as a consumer can see are those that are normally covered up. Note that the woman's eyes are not in any part of the ad, eyes being a part of the body that the public can connect with more than any other. This makes the woman a faceless, more of an object or symbol than an actual woman. Women could possibly be drawn to this ad to buy the fragrance for their respective partners, as although it is essentially an ad based on menís fantasy, it is also classy. The colours are kept simple: white, red, and skin toned. The woman in the ad is well groomed, from her nails to lips, even to her pubic area. The shock factor in this ad will get people talking, as many other sex-based adverts have in the past. For example, YSL's campaign for their fragrance 'Opium' featured a naked Sophie Dahl resembling a woman mid-orgasm. This ad was removed from billboards for being inappropriate, however people talked about it, therefore it sold. This Tom Ford ad may go the same way; however it is, in my opinion very close to overstepping the mark between clever advertising and borderline pornography.
