Film posters are tricky as there is a list of specifications to meet and master in order to create the perfect balance of enigma codes, satisfaction and film relevance. I believe that this “Kick-Ass” poster has captured that balance: the concept of the film is arguably any 'average Joe' can be a hero, and this can be visually recognised through the continuous images that differ from your average, epic, hero film i.e the dribbling graffiti , the mangled face and most obviously sitting in a skip full of rubbish. It would be hard to create anything epic when battling with the grungy mise-en-scene, and yet the powerful glow of lighting that frames Kick-Ass summons heroic connotations, matching the determined look on his face. We are then illustrated with the film idea as a whole: a superhero film which meanders from the norm. The catch line of “I can't fly. But I can kick your ass” allows the comical aspect of the film materialise, as we discover humour and, to an extent, a sense of reality which is lacking in the heavily saturated genre of superhero films.
