United Colors of Benetton are probably one of the few brands that are known not for what they produce, but for their adverts. The genius behind these ads was the Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani. The Benetton ads had no direct link to their clothing line but rather portrayed a certain problem or issue. All of Benettons ads caused great controversy and disgust, yet won a lot of prizes, not only in the advertisement industry but also in the arts world. In the spring of 1996, billboards all over the world were invaded by an image of three hearts overprinted with the words “White, Black, Yellow” - the new anti-racist message launched by United Colors of Benetton in conjunction with SOS Racism, French anti-racist NGO. Personally the Benetton campaigns and ads are one of my favorite, due the great use of image and shock value they portray. Unite Colors of Benetton dared to be different with their ads and so gained great awareness through their controversial campaigns.
